John Dykes

For 35 years John S. Dykes has worked on over four thousand five hundred illustration
assignments for hundreds of clients, earning recognition and awards from top illustration
industry associations. Among these organizations are The Society of Illustrators, Communication Arts, American Illustration, 3×3 Illustration Annual, and Print Magazine. He was included as part of the Luerzer’s Archive Top 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide. John has created illustrations for consumer magazines, newspapers, advertising, corporate publications and books. In addition to his assignment illustration work, John has been devoting more time to working on larger paintings for gallery exhibits.

John earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Syracuse University in 1982. John was invited to give a presentation of his work at Hartford University in 2009 and soon after joined as a student. He earned his Master of Fine Arts in Illustration from the University of Hartford 2013. John has taught illustration at Rhode Island School of Design and New Hampshire Institute of Art and has widely presented his work.

The Norman Rockwell Museum has recently acquired twenty-three of John’s original illustrations for their permanent collection. John’s work is also part of The New Britain Museum of American Art, and many private collections nationwide. Murals and high visibility public projects are an inspiring part of John’s workload.

Among John’s list of exhibitions and group shows are Brigham Young University, National Baseball Hall of Fame, Norman Rockwell Museum, Savannah Collage of Art, Society of Illustrators, The International Museum of Cartoon Art, The Stamford Museum, The Delaware Art Museum, and The Art Institute of California.

Some of John’s illustration clients include Time, Newsweek, U.S. News, BusinessWeek, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Boston Globe, Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly, Atlantic Monthly, Sports Illustrated, Money, Amex, AT&T, IBM, NBC, Smithsonian, National Geographic, Readers’ Digest, Forbes, Fortune, Pentagram Design, Major League Baseball, and Disney.
