The Spirits Teach Us How to Build the Union Family Sewing Machine: Live Performance
This 35-minute show reenacts efforts of John Murray Spear (1804–1887) and his friends to create an affordable sewing machine, with the help of the spirits of deceased luminaries. Spear was an abolitionist, an advocate for the rights of women, prisoners, and labor, and a Universalist minister. In 1851 he took up spiritualism, with the aim of bringing about a world where the living could work with the dead to create new technologies and bring about a golden age. Come join us as we celebrate a time when it felt like anything was possible. Lemonade will be served.
